As I completed my last devotional based on the life of Moses’ mother, I was inspired to share a few nuggets about motherhood that I garnered from the same scripture, Exodus 2:1-10.

1. Your child’s potential is not bound by your past or present circumstances ( once you have surrendered to Christ).

Moses’ mother was a mere slave, she wasn’t assigned a name in this chapter but she gave birth to a spiritual giant whose name is renowned centuries after his death. Moses was even included in the transfiguration! (Matthew 17:1-9). You may seem invisible: socially, academically, financially, etc. but your present situation does not dictate the outcome for your children. A slave gave birth to a prince but most importantly- one of the greatest men in biblical history. Moses did not demonstrate his spiritual purpose until he was approximately 80 years old. A long wait but it was worth the wait. Stay tuned…the story does not end with you.

2. Trust your divine source

God is your ultimate source. Whether you choose to be a stay-at-home mum or you are employed outside of the home – the needs of your children can be met. If you are a stay-at-home mum you will not receive a salary but at the same time, you have access to blessings from unexpected sources. Without a regular income, God can lead you to use creative means to generate an income or procure the necessary resources. Consider the irony: Moses’ mother was paid by the princess to care for her child. On the other hand, if you have to work outside the home, this can cause you to feel guilty as you have less time to spend nurturing your child. Do not despair; if it is God’s will for you to be employed outside of the home, He will provide opportunities for you to foster faith, determination, love and resilience in your child. Moses’ mother only had Moses in her care for a short period but not even the best Egyptian training could not erase the Hebrew values she inculcated in him. Make the time you spend with your child meaningful. Your God shall supply ALL your needs according to His riches in glory. Philippians 4:19

3. You are a testimony

Let the life you lead be a practical demonstration of your commitment to God. While her daughter Miriam guarded Moses’ basket, she was able to witness the miraculous moment when the Egyptian princess decided to adopt a Hebrew child and then pay his mother for his care. This was a clear demonstration of the power of God. Miriam would live to see the same Moses, who was delivered from death through a mother’s faith, deliver God’s children from over 400 years of slavery. What she saw her mother do was a greater testimony of faith than any teaching she could have received. Our children are our students who we must teach, directly and indirectly, about the power of God ( Deuteronomy 6:7).

4. God’s got this!

No death warrant can stop the will of God! No prison sentence, death threat, disease, lie, rejection, disability can withstand the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. Without God your child is living under a death threat but placed in the hand of God, that child will overcome anything. Pharaoh, with all his power, could not destroy a three-month child. He nurtured a child that he had mandated to die. It wasn’t about what Pharaoh wanted but rather, it was about what God-ordained. Even when Moses made mistakes the Lord still preserved Him because there was a divine mandate to be fulfilled. Mother, stop worrying about your child – instead, proclaim the decrees of God over your child’s life. It shall be well with the righteous! (Isaiah 3:10)
